[About the Event]
On Holding Space is a publication that unfurls present ecologies of generosity by way of examining how holding space for one another might colour the way we move, make, or compose alliances. The publication features interviews with Sonia Kwek, Charmaine Poh, Pey Chuan Tan and PURE EVER; artworks by Joanne Pang, Marla Bendini, Rifqi Amirul Rosli and Aki Hassan; and poems by Jollin Tan.
Though publication was soft launched last year, the artists involved will be gathering in person for a conversation for the first time. They will discuss what they've been thinking about or working on and revisit some of the questions they were posed during previous interviews with Object Lessons Space.
[About the Speakers]
JOANNE PANG explores the relationships between body, memory and space through site-specific installations, paintings and drawings. Pang encapsulates the ephemeral sensibilities of time and its relationship to the tender nature of memory – its fluidity, stagnancy and the tensions in between. Pang holds a MFA from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art, Denmark and a BFA in Visual Communication from NTU School of Art, Design and Media, Singapore. She has participated in exhibitions across Singapore, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Russia, UK, at institutions such as the National Museum of Singapore, Substation (Singapore) and Institute of Contemporary Art (Singapore).
MARLA BENDINI (b. 1986, Singapore) is a BFA Interactive Media graduate of School of Art, Design & Media (ADM), Nanyang Technological University (2013), where she focused on interactive video installations, film and performance. She started painting and making installations during her junior college education (2004). Bendini is a cross-disciplinary artist and trans woman working in painting, text, sound and performance to articulate the infinitely faceted transgender experience on her own terms. Her current painting practice uses the female gaze through a combination of writing, drawing, painting, collage and printmaking to create layered 'documentations' of a unique woman's experience. She can also be found online at @marlabendiniart.
PEY CHUAN TAN is a curator, producer, and the creator of I_S_L_A_N_D_S, an experimental platform based in Singapore. She collaborates with a wide network of creatives, bringing diverse audiences together for educative and empathic connections. Pey Chuan is interested in the intersections between art and design, as well as new models for integration and support of the arts.
PURE EVER is an alliance of people whose goal is to provide visibility for under-represented or emerging creatives across all vectors of political, social, and creative interests. We aspire to find commonality and collective foresight through nuanced and intense forms of art-making; one that hopefully occupies a more generous spirit of collaboration, creativity, networking, and solidarity-making. Current members include Elsa Wong, Hilary Yeo, Raigo Law, Rifqi Amirul Rosli, Zhiyi Cao.
RAIGO LAW is a hybrid-media artist whose works explores on the liminal ambiencet hat dwells in the sub-consciousness of the cognitive psyche. His interests, morphs into visceral productions that encapsulates futile truths, liquid emotions, soft fantasies and hard realities.
RIFQI AMIRUL ROSLI is a printmaker and sculptor whose work deals with the sentimentality of in-between spaces and places through constructing speculative states – states of suspension, transition, and liminality.
ZHIYI CAO is an artist based in Singapore. Through her multi-disciplinary practice with a focus in film, she reflects upon millennial expositions and exigencies, seeking to exercise strategic complicity with the narratives she creates.
