Otherwhere 02: Database/Process
Self-published
Otherwhere: Explorations into Mistranslation is a series of video and print-based works revolving around the themes of identity and third culture through mistranslation and misunderstanding.
Otherwhere is centred around a machine-learning model trained on 3700 found typography images from around Hong Kong, with images generated either through own photography, Google Street View or associate hashtags. To generate a series of mistranslated Chinese characters through the blurred lens of Artificial Intelligence approximation. Like memory, the machine visually remembers what it saw and attempts to recreate the forms. This reflects the neither/nor world that third culture manifests, a world of misunderstandings and mistranslations.
